FALANA HITS BACK AT WIKE OVER ALLEGATIONS OF LYING ABOUT S/COURT VERDICT

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has responded to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over allegations that he lied about the Supreme Court verdict on Rivers Assembly. In a statement on Sunday, Falana described Wike’s allegations as baseless and tendentious. Wike had accused Falana of spreading falsehoods about the defection status of some Rivers state legislators on national television. “A few days ago, the supreme court settled this matter of defection,” Wike said. “If someone of Femi Falana’s caliber can go on national television and lie, it’s very serious. Lies can cause a lot of crisis.” Falana, however, maintained that his comments were based on facts. “All I said was that the matter of the defection of the 27 legislators was raised suo motu and determined by the eminent Justices of the apex court,” he said. “My comment was based on the undeniable fact that the vexed issue of the defection of the 27 legislators was pending in the Port Harcourt judicial division of the Federal High Court at the material time.” Falana also pointed out the inconsistency in Wike’s position, noting that the minister had praised the Supreme Court’s decision and even held a thanksgiving service to celebrate it.

WIKE MEETS WITH SUSPENDED RIVERS STATE LAWMAKERS IN UK

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, met with suspended Rivers State lawmakers for a dinner in the United Kingdom on Monday. This meeting follows his political engagements in Port Harcourt on Sunday. The dinner was part of a legislative capacity-building program the lawmakers are attending in the UK. Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, confirmed the event on Facebook, stating that the FCT minister traveled to the UK after visiting allies in Rivers State. The suspended lawmakers were removed by President Bola Tinubu amid a state of emergency in Rivers State due to security concerns. Governor Sim Fubara, embroiled in a power struggle with Wike, was also suspended. Despite a Supreme Court order to reinstate the lawmakers, tensions persist, particularly over Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget. Details of the dinner discussion remain undisclosed, but the meeting highlights ongoing efforts to navigate Rivers State’s turbulent politics.

FCT MINISTER NYESOM WIKE DISMISSES COLLAPSE RUMORS, BLAMES POLITICAL OPPONENTS

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dismissed social media reports claiming he collapsed last week, labeling the claims as politically motivated fabrications. Wike addressed the rumors on Monday after inspecting four ongoing projects in the territory, including the International Conference Centre (ICC). He described the reports as “the handiwork of persons trying to score cheap political points,” asserting that the rumors were spread by political enemies. Wike linked the speculation to the recent visit of George Nwaeke, former Rivers State Head of Service, to Abuja, where he reportedly shared undisclosed information about the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. “Nobody is immuned from death, but everyone will die at their appointed time,” Wike stated, addressing the false claims about his health. He concluded with a defiant message to critics, saying, “I will live to sign the condolence letters of all those that wish me dead.” The minister did not provide further details on the nature of Nwaeke’s revelations but emphasized that the timing of the rumors was intentional and aimed at undermining his political standing.

FCTA MINISTER NYESOM WIKE CALLS FOR UNITY, VIGILANCE IN EID-EL-FITR MESSAGE

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, has extended warm greetings to residents of the nation’s capital, particularly the Muslim community, as they celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. In a message on Tuesday, Wike praised the spiritual devotion and generosity demonstrated during the holy month while urging citizens to uphold unity and peace beyond the festive period. Wike described Ramadan as a period of “deep spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and an opportunity to draw closer to Almighty Allah,” adding, “I pray that the Almighty, in His infinite mercy, accepts all our acts of worship, supplications, and sacrifices during the blessed month and rewards us abundantly with His divine blessings.” He commended residents for their “acts of charity, kindness, and generosity,” emphasizing that such virtues are critical to fostering harmony in the FCT. The minister called on residents to sustain these values, stating, “As we celebrate Eid, I urge all residents to continue to embody these noble virtues even beyond Ramadan, as they are essential to building a harmonious and prosperous society.” He stressed the FCT’s symbolic role as Nigeria’s unifying center, urging citizens to “live in peace and harmony, respecting one another irrespective of religious or ethnic differences, and working together for the common good.” Wike reiterated the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, welfare, and security, noting, “The FCT Administration remains steadfast in its commitment to the infrastructural development of the Territory, as well as the welfare and security of all residents.” He appealed for collective vigilance, stating, “Security is a collective duty, and I encourage everyone to promptly report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. For it is only in an atmosphere of peace that we can all realize our collective and individual dreams.” The minister also urged prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and other leaders, saying, “The task of building a Territory that reflects our collective dreams—one of peace, prosperity, and unity—is immense, and we need your support, faith, and most importantly, your prayers, for divine wisdom and guidance.” Wike warned against divisive elements, declaring, “Let us remain united and not allow anyone to sow seeds of division or instigate public disturbance.” He concluded with renewed Eid wishes, praying for a “happy, peaceful, memorable, and blessed Eid-el-Fitr” for all residents.

PRESIDENT TINUBU THREATENS TO SACK FCT MINISTER WIKE OVER UPCOMING ELECTIONS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, threatening to dismiss him if the results of the upcoming FCT elections heavily favor the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike’s political party. Tinubu made the remarks during a dinner on Saturday evening held to celebrate Eid-El-Fitri, where he emphasized the need for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure victory in the territory. Addressing attendees, Tinubu revealed he had cautioned Wike, a former PDP governor, to prioritize the APC’s success in the polls. “Give me any opportunity for my party to win elections in FCT. I know where you are coming from, your own party,” Tinubu stated. He further warned, “If this thing goes too much in your own favor, you will lose your job,” underscoring the consequences of a PDP-dominated outcome. The president described his comments as a “political jab” aimed at the FCT minister, referencing Wike’s ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital. “I threw a political jab at Wike. I told him with all these great jobs you’re doing at the FCT, if election favors your party too much than my own party, you’ll lose your job oh…,” Tinubu quipped. The remarks highlight rising political tensions as Wike, a prominent PDP figure, serves in Tinubu’s APC-led administration. Wike, who served as governor of Rivers State under the PDP before his appointment as FCT minister, has yet to publicly respond to the president’s comments. The statement has sparked discussions about the implications of partisan loyalty within key government roles ahead of the elections.

FORMER RIVERS STATE GOVERNOR AMAECHI CLAIMS CRISIS IN RIVERS IS ABOUT MONEY SHARING

Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State is centered around the sharing of money. In an interview with DW on Saturday, Amaechi stated that the conflict between suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, stems from disputes over the allocation of funds from the oil-rich state. Amaechi questioned the nature of the disagreement, asking why the two leaders have not publicly explained the root of their feud. “The fight between the current governor of Rivers State and the FCT minister is about sharing money. If not, what is the quarrel? Nigerians don’t dislike corruption anymore. I’ve not seen anybody on the street questioning what the problem is. Can both of them speak to the public and tell us what the problem is about?” he said. The former governor also criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional. His remarks come amid heightened tensions in the state, with political factions clashing over control of governance and resources. Amaechi’s comments highlight growing concerns over transparency and accountability in the management of Rivers State’s finances, as the political standoff continues to escalate.

TINUBU’S STATE OF EMERGENCY IN RIVERS STATE CONDEMNED BY PDP CHIEFTAIN

The Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Ekiti State, Hon. Dare Adeleke, has strongly condemned the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State. In a statement, Adeleke described the president’s pronouncement as illegal, warning that it could tear the country apart and plunge Nigeria into anarchy. In a statement, the Chairman of the PDP Ekiti Caretaker Committee, Hon. Dare Adeleke, said: “It is shocking that President Tinubu has embarked on a mission to weaken Nigeria’s democracy and destroy the very fabric on which it stands.” Adeleke stated that Tinubu’s actions are a desperate bid to seize Rivers State ahead of 2027, hand in hand with his loyalist, Nyesom Wike. Adeleke noted that Tinubu has blatantly ignored the 1999 Constitution by appointing a retired military officer, Admiral Ibokette Ibas, to govern Rivers State after suspending the governor and the state’s National Assembly under the guise of protecting national interests. “The president, who swore to protect democracy and the people, has embarked on a reckless mission that could tear the country apart and push it into anarchy,” Adeleke said. Dare Adeleke also condemned Wike’s role in the crisis, describing him as a traitor to his party, the PDP, who is shamelessly oppressing his own people. “All because he wants to play godfather, continue ruling Rivers by proxy, and continue to exploit its resources,” Adeleke added. Adeleke called on the judiciary to restore Nigerians’ trust in the institution and to put President Tinubu in check. He also urged the National Assembly to refuse to be complicit in this “disgraceful abuse of power” and called on the international community to intervene.

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT BOLA TINUBU ON THE STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN RIVERS STATE AND THE NEED TO REMOVE NYESOM WIKE AS FCT MINISTER TO COMPLETE A POLITICAL SOLUTION TO THE RIVERS STATE CRISIS

Friday Lines (54) WithDr Abubakar Alkali Mr. President, you did the right thing by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers state over the prolonged political crisis in. Without a doubt, the crisis, if left unchecked, could have a devastating effect on the nation’s democracy. Your declaration on the state of emergency in Rivers is a stitch in time that saved our democracy. Your earlier intervention in the crisis by calling the two gladiators – Governor Fubara and Minister Wike- to order was largely ignored, leaving you with no option but to declare the state of emergency. However, the removal of Gov Fubara from the office is only but one part of the problem solved. What about the other part of the crisis? How about the one in the red corner? Your minister Nyesom Wike, who, if we are sincere to ourselves, is the fire that fuels the Rivers state political crisis to achieve a predetermined goal or better still serve his personal interests? Mr President, to balance the equation there is the need for you to remove Mr Nyesom Wike as minister of the federal capital territory (FCT) and member of the federal executive council (FEC) so that total peace can reign in Rivers state. Removing Governor Fubara from office and leaving Minister Wike will only solve half of the political logjam in Rivers state. To restore normalcy, Wike needs to go as well. A state of emergency is a last resort and powers to declare it are fully conferred on you as the President in section 305 of the constitution, Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) which you have invoked to restore sanity to Rivers state. It is instructive that in your 20 paragraph speech this evening on your declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers state, you didn’t mention Nyesom Wike even once. The speech was one-sided as only Governor Fubara bore all the brunts while Minister Wike appeared clean. Is this a confirmation of the widely held belief that the federal government has taken sides on the Rivers crisis? Leaving Wike on the loose will surely boomerang because he will come back to renew the political crisis in Rivers after the 6 months expiration of the state of emergency (if not renewed). The right thing to do is to demobilise Wike by removing him from his current role as FCT minister through which he oils the crisis in Rivers state. Quite honestly, Wike’s aggravated ambition and desire to control Rivers state will not allow peace to reign in the state unless his wings are clipped. Mr. President, Wike can still play politics for you in your bid for reelection in 2027. He can checkmate the PDP, but for the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy and economy, he should not be allowed anywhere near the edges of executive power. The man is simply too politically smart. Needless to add here that sustaining peaceful coexistence in Rivers state is critical for sustaining democracy in Nigeria, especially when juxtaposed with the need to safeguard our oil infrastructure, which is vital to Nigeria’s economic survival. For once, i thank you Mr President for taking this timely intervention to restore normalcy in Rivers state but again I wish to remind you that this declaration has only solved one part of the problem (Fubara in the blue corner). The other part of the problem (Wike in the red corner) is still rolling and unless you clip his wings by removing Wike as FCT minister and member, federal executive council, the crisis may be far from over.

FCT MINISTER REVOKES 4,794 LAND TITLES OVER NON-PAYMENT OF GROUND RENT

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the revocation of 4,794 land titles due to non-payment of Ground Rent for over 40 years. This decision affects property owners in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape districts. In a statement, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister, Lere Olayinka, explained that the FCTA made numerous publications in national newspapers and announcements on broadcast media since 2023, calling on defaulters to pay up all outstanding bills and ground rents. However, these efforts yielded little response, as several allottees failed to pay. Olayinka emphasized that payment of Ground Rent on landed properties in the FCT is founded on extant legislation. The affected districts include Central Area District (Cadastral Zone A00), Garki I (Cadastral Zone A01), Wuse I (Cadastral Zone A02), Garki II (Cadastral Zone A03), Asokoro (Cadastral Zone A04), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A05), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A06), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A07), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A08), and Guzape (Cadastral Zone A09). As of the end of 2024, a total of N6,967,980,119 is owed as Ground Rent by 8,375 property owners. Lere Olayinka stated that 4,794 land titles are in default of Ground rent payment for 10 years and above, which is in contravention of the terms and conditions of grant of the Rights of Occupancy. Consequently, the titles of the properties in default of payment of Ground Rent for 10 years and above have been revoked forthwith. Olayinka added that a 21-day grace period is given to title holders who are in default of payment of Ground Rent for between one and ten years, after which the affected titles will be revoked. This move is aimed at enforcing compliance with the payment of Ground Rent in the FCT.

IJAW GROUP CALLS FOR WIKE’S DISMISSAL OVER ALLEGED ANTI-IJAW REMARKS

A political group, Ijaws for Tinubu 2027, has demanded the immediate dismissal of Nyesom Wike as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister following his alleged derogatory remarks about the Ijaw people. The group’s leader, Tamuno Esiri, made the demand in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Friday. Esiri stated that Wike’s comments could damage President Bola Tinubu’s chances of re-election in 2027. “We believe Wike is deliberately undermining the president’s support among the Ijaw people, who make up a majority in the Niger Delta,” Esiri asserted. He warned that Wike’s continued presence in the cabinet could destabilize the region and threaten both peace and democracy. Esiri also expressed doubt that Wike could deliver Rivers for Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections, suggesting that the former governor’s political influence had waned. Furthermore, Esiri criticized the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers House of Assembly for allegedly proposing bills that could destabilize the state’s political landscape. He issued a 14-day ultimatum for the lawmakers to support peace by allowing Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill. Esiri emphasized that the Ijaw people are among the dominant ethnic groups in the Niger Delta, and Wike’s comments were strongly condemned. “If President Bola Tinubu is serious about securing a second term in office, he must act swiftly to remove Wike,” Esiri said.
