ABUJA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE RENAMED AFTER PRESIDENT TINUBU

The Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC) has been renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The renaming ceremony took place during the reopening of the renovated ICC on Tuesday in Abuja. Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, in a statement, announced that President Tinubu directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to pay for the use of the facility to ensure its upkeep and long-term sustainability. Onanuga said the President was impressed with the high-quality renovation carried out by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. During the event, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike announced the renaming of the Centre, which opened in 1991. President Tinubu recalled his previous visit to the Centre during the 2024 ECOWAS Parliament conference, where he was shocked at its poor state. “When I attended the ECOWAS Parliament conference, the environment was dirty, disorganised, and uninhabitable. I turned to Mr. Wike and said, ‘This Conference Centre does not reflect who we are. Have we sunk this low?’” Onanuga noted that the President praised Julius Berger Nigeria PLC for delivering a high-quality renovation. Tinubu said, “The International Conference Centre is part of our country’s larger vision to become a hub for regional diplomacy, continental trade discussions, global partnerships, and other thoughtful, well-outlined goals that reflect our ‘Nigeria First’ principle.” Wike said the FCT transformed the facility within eight months after the President’s directive. “Mr. President, this transformation would not have been possible without your leadership. Many presidents have come here, but none said this was not what Nigeria needed because they lacked your courage and vision,” he said. Onanuga further quoted Wike as saying, “Whether you are a ministry or an agency, you must pay something to use this facility. That is the only way we can sustain it.” Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the FCT Administration for naming halls at the Centre after the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria. President Tinubu commended Wike for his vision and execution, saying, “Do not pay attention to the busybodies and bystanders. Whatever they say, continue your good work. You are a transformational leader with foresight, vision, and determination.”

PDP STAKEHOLDERS DEMAND ZONING OF 2027 PRESIDENTIAL TICKET TO THE SOUTH

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on the party leadership to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South. The stakeholders, who met in Abuja on Monday, made the demand in a communique read by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. According to the stakeholders, the party’s crisis is due to the refusal of some individuals to adhere to the party’s constitution. They cited specific sections of the constitution, including Section 36(1)(a)(b) and (c), Sections 47(3)(5) and 48(1)(i), and the definitive Supreme Court judgment regarding the position of the office of the National Secretary of the party. The stakeholders expressed alarm that the party is on a path to self-annihilation if urgent steps are not taken to address the crisis. They resolved that the candidacy for the presidency in 2027 must be zoned to the South, in the spirit of fairness, inclusion, and federal character principles. “In the spirit of fairness, inclusion, federal Character principles and respect for our party Constitution, the party must make an unequivocal announcement, zoning its Presidential Candidate to the South in the 2027 general election,” the communique read. The stakeholders also reaffirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of the party, in line with the Supreme Court judgment. They stated that only Anyanwu can issue notices of meeting, and that any notices not issued by him are null and void. “We, therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great Party,” the communique read. “In line with the provisions of our party constitution only the National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, can issue notices of meeting of the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Caucus and the National Working Committee and to this end all notices not issued by him and actions founded on them, including correspondences to INEC are null and void and of no effect whatsoever.” The stakeholders demanded that the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary of the party jointly issue a notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission, with an attached agenda for the National Executive Committee Meeting of the Party. They also urged all members to uphold the rule of law, respect constitutional mandate, and support the efforts of the National Reconciliation Committee headed by Senator Bukola Saraki.

VETERAN JOURNALIST DR REUBEN ABATI REFUTES ALLEGATIONS BY FCT MINISTER’S AIDE

Veteran journalist Dr Reuben Abati has issued a statement refuting allegations levelled against him by Lere Olayinka, an aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, during an interview on Arise News. Dr Abati denied approaching Minister Wike to beg for money, describing the claim as a lie. “If anyone — including an ex-partner — went to him under false pretences to solicit funds in my name, I place a clear disclaimer. Such actions were not authorised by me, and Minister Wike reserves every right to call it out as fraud,” Dr Abati said. Dr Abati also clarified that he was invited by the EFCC for questioning, but was not asked to return any money. He revealed that the EFCC under former Chairman Ibrahim Magu later issued an apology to him. The veteran journalist dismissed Lere Olayinka’s claims, saying, “I will not indulge further in responding to him directly; he is not my peer. I await a more meaningful conversation — if any — from his principal, not his proxy.” Dr Abati further denied being Rotimi Amaechi’s spokesperson or having his phone number, calling it a fabrication. He explained that his absence from The Morning Show was due to a pre-scheduled book review engagement. Dr Abati stood firm on his comments about Minister Wike, emphasizing that public officials should remain subject to public scrutiny and accountability. “Nobody in public service is above accountability,” he said. The schorlarly journalist also addressed the matter of the late Buruji Kashamu, stating that allegations against him were never proven in any court of law. Dr Abati expressed appreciation to his team for their professionalism and his wife for her support.

TWO WATER TREATMENT PLANTS UNDERGOING MAJOR REHABILITATION CAUSES PARTIAL WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION IN FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained that the partial disruption of water supply in Abuja city centre and some satellite towns is due to major rehabilitation works on two of the four water treatment plants operated by the FCT Water Board. Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, in a statement, said water supply to residents will be rationed for a period of two weeks as only two water treatment plants will be in use, while the other two are undergoing rehabilitation. “Residents are therefore urged to store enough water to cater for their needs during this period as supply will be rationed,” Olayinka said. The rehabilitation works, which have reached an advanced stage on Phases 1 and 2, involve replacing and reinstalling electro-mechanical equipment, necessitating a total shutdown of the two interconnected plants. Although Phases 3 and 4 water treatment plants are operational, they cannot meet the full demand of the populace, resulting in partial disruptions in supply. Lere Olayinka assured that SCC Nigeria Limited is working 24/7 to conclude the works before the scheduled time. To mitigate the effects of the partial shutdown during the Sallah celebration, the two plants under rehabilitation will be temporarily activated to supply water during the festive period. The FCT Water Board has developed a rationing timetable that alternates between Lines 1 and 2 of the distribution network to minimize the adverse effects on residents. Lere Olayinka appealed to residents to bear with the FCTA, assuring that the rehabilitation will be completed before two weeks and will ensure better service delivery. The FCT Water Board operates four water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 30,000 cubic meters per hour, divided into Phases 1 to 4. The rehabilitation is critical to restoring the plants to optimal performance, as they are currently operating below installed capacity.

NUJ URGES FCT MINISTER WIKE TO ADOPT BALANCED APPROACH IN REVENUE ENFORCEMENT

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, to adopt a more balanced and empathetic approach in enforcing revenue collection measures in Abuja. While commending Wike’s commitment to infrastructural development and internally generated revenue drives, the NUJ expressed concern over the current revenue enforcement methods. “The recent sealing of hotels and businesses, though understood as a push for compliance, raises fears about possible business closures, job losses, and a weakening local economy,” the NUJ stated in a release signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi. The union advised the FCT Administration to ensure all enforcement actions, especially those involving ground rent collection and property seizures, strictly follow due process and legal frameworks. “Actions perceived as unilateral or excessive risk creating uncertainty, discouraging investment, and eroding public confidence,” the statement read. The NUJ also highlighted potential negative implications for Nigeria’s international image if enforcement measures are seen to trample on citizens’ rights or bypass democratic procedures. “Development in the FCT must reflect empathy, respect for human rights, and unshaken adherence to the rule of law,” the union emphasized. By adopting a balanced approach, the NUJ believes the credibility of the FCT Administration and the integrity of the Tinubu-led government can be safeguarded. The union urged Wike to reassess current enforcement strategies, prioritizing empathy, fairness, and protection of citizens’ rights.

FALANA HITS BACK AT WIKE OVER ALLEGATIONS OF LYING ABOUT S/COURT VERDICT

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has responded to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over allegations that he lied about the Supreme Court verdict on Rivers Assembly. In a statement on Sunday, Falana described Wike’s allegations as baseless and tendentious. Wike had accused Falana of spreading falsehoods about the defection status of some Rivers state legislators on national television. “A few days ago, the supreme court settled this matter of defection,” Wike said. “If someone of Femi Falana’s caliber can go on national television and lie, it’s very serious. Lies can cause a lot of crisis.” Falana, however, maintained that his comments were based on facts. “All I said was that the matter of the defection of the 27 legislators was raised suo motu and determined by the eminent Justices of the apex court,” he said. “My comment was based on the undeniable fact that the vexed issue of the defection of the 27 legislators was pending in the Port Harcourt judicial division of the Federal High Court at the material time.” Falana also pointed out the inconsistency in Wike’s position, noting that the minister had praised the Supreme Court’s decision and even held a thanksgiving service to celebrate it.

WIKE MEETS WITH SUSPENDED RIVERS STATE LAWMAKERS IN UK

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, met with suspended Rivers State lawmakers for a dinner in the United Kingdom on Monday. This meeting follows his political engagements in Port Harcourt on Sunday. The dinner was part of a legislative capacity-building program the lawmakers are attending in the UK. Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, confirmed the event on Facebook, stating that the FCT minister traveled to the UK after visiting allies in Rivers State. The suspended lawmakers were removed by President Bola Tinubu amid a state of emergency in Rivers State due to security concerns. Governor Sim Fubara, embroiled in a power struggle with Wike, was also suspended. Despite a Supreme Court order to reinstate the lawmakers, tensions persist, particularly over Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget. Details of the dinner discussion remain undisclosed, but the meeting highlights ongoing efforts to navigate Rivers State’s turbulent politics.

FCT MINISTER NYESOM WIKE DISMISSES COLLAPSE RUMORS, BLAMES POLITICAL OPPONENTS

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dismissed social media reports claiming he collapsed last week, labeling the claims as politically motivated fabrications. Wike addressed the rumors on Monday after inspecting four ongoing projects in the territory, including the International Conference Centre (ICC). He described the reports as “the handiwork of persons trying to score cheap political points,” asserting that the rumors were spread by political enemies. Wike linked the speculation to the recent visit of George Nwaeke, former Rivers State Head of Service, to Abuja, where he reportedly shared undisclosed information about the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. “Nobody is immuned from death, but everyone will die at their appointed time,” Wike stated, addressing the false claims about his health. He concluded with a defiant message to critics, saying, “I will live to sign the condolence letters of all those that wish me dead.” The minister did not provide further details on the nature of Nwaeke’s revelations but emphasized that the timing of the rumors was intentional and aimed at undermining his political standing.

FCTA MINISTER NYESOM WIKE CALLS FOR UNITY, VIGILANCE IN EID-EL-FITR MESSAGE

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, has extended warm greetings to residents of the nation’s capital, particularly the Muslim community, as they celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. In a message on Tuesday, Wike praised the spiritual devotion and generosity demonstrated during the holy month while urging citizens to uphold unity and peace beyond the festive period. Wike described Ramadan as a period of “deep spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and an opportunity to draw closer to Almighty Allah,” adding, “I pray that the Almighty, in His infinite mercy, accepts all our acts of worship, supplications, and sacrifices during the blessed month and rewards us abundantly with His divine blessings.” He commended residents for their “acts of charity, kindness, and generosity,” emphasizing that such virtues are critical to fostering harmony in the FCT. The minister called on residents to sustain these values, stating, “As we celebrate Eid, I urge all residents to continue to embody these noble virtues even beyond Ramadan, as they are essential to building a harmonious and prosperous society.” He stressed the FCT’s symbolic role as Nigeria’s unifying center, urging citizens to “live in peace and harmony, respecting one another irrespective of religious or ethnic differences, and working together for the common good.” Wike reiterated the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, welfare, and security, noting, “The FCT Administration remains steadfast in its commitment to the infrastructural development of the Territory, as well as the welfare and security of all residents.” He appealed for collective vigilance, stating, “Security is a collective duty, and I encourage everyone to promptly report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. For it is only in an atmosphere of peace that we can all realize our collective and individual dreams.” The minister also urged prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and other leaders, saying, “The task of building a Territory that reflects our collective dreams—one of peace, prosperity, and unity—is immense, and we need your support, faith, and most importantly, your prayers, for divine wisdom and guidance.” Wike warned against divisive elements, declaring, “Let us remain united and not allow anyone to sow seeds of division or instigate public disturbance.” He concluded with renewed Eid wishes, praying for a “happy, peaceful, memorable, and blessed Eid-el-Fitr” for all residents.

PRESIDENT TINUBU THREATENS TO SACK FCT MINISTER WIKE OVER UPCOMING ELECTIONS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, threatening to dismiss him if the results of the upcoming FCT elections heavily favor the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike’s political party. Tinubu made the remarks during a dinner on Saturday evening held to celebrate Eid-El-Fitri, where he emphasized the need for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure victory in the territory. Addressing attendees, Tinubu revealed he had cautioned Wike, a former PDP governor, to prioritize the APC’s success in the polls. “Give me any opportunity for my party to win elections in FCT. I know where you are coming from, your own party,” Tinubu stated. He further warned, “If this thing goes too much in your own favor, you will lose your job,” underscoring the consequences of a PDP-dominated outcome. The president described his comments as a “political jab” aimed at the FCT minister, referencing Wike’s ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital. “I threw a political jab at Wike. I told him with all these great jobs you’re doing at the FCT, if election favors your party too much than my own party, you’ll lose your job oh…,” Tinubu quipped. The remarks highlight rising political tensions as Wike, a prominent PDP figure, serves in Tinubu’s APC-led administration. Wike, who served as governor of Rivers State under the PDP before his appointment as FCT minister, has yet to publicly respond to the president’s comments. The statement has sparked discussions about the implications of partisan loyalty within key government roles ahead of the elections.
