Health authorities in Singapore are testing two residents for hantavirus following an outbreak linked to a cruise ship that has sparked international health concerns.

According to officials, the two individuals had recently traveled on the virus-hit cruise vessel and are now undergoing medical evaluation as part of precautionary containment measures. The suspected cases emerged as several countries intensified monitoring efforts tied to passengers and crew connected to the ship.

Singapore’s Ministry of Health said the individuals are being closely monitored while laboratory tests are conducted to determine whether they contracted the virus. Authorities added that contact tracing procedures and health surveillance measures have also been activated.

The cruise ship outbreak has already triggered emergency responses in parts of Europe, with countries coordinating alongside the World Health Organization to manage passenger evacuations and contain possible transmission risks.

Hantavirus is a rare disease typically spread through exposure to infected rodents or contaminated environments. In severe cases, the infection can lead to serious respiratory complications, though experts say human-to-human transmission remains uncommon depending on the strain involved.

Singaporean health officials have urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that precautionary protocols are in place and that the overall risk to the public remains low.

The outbreak has nevertheless prompted increased screening measures at several international entry points as governments seek to track travelers who may have had contact with infected passengers aboard the cruise ship.

Medical experts say symptoms associated with hantavirus can include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Authorities advised anyone who recently traveled on the affected vessel and feels unwell to seek medical attention immediately.
