Catalonia’s Human Tower Climers Welcome Pope Leo XIV in Spectacular Barcelona Display
Pope Leo XIV received a uniquely Catalan welcome during his visit to Barcelona on Tuesday as members of Catalonia’s renowned human tower groups, known as Castellers, formed a towering human structure at a major prayer vigil attended by tens of thousands of people.
The display took place at the city’s Olympic Stadium, where more than 40,000 worshippers gathered for an evening youth prayer event as part of the pontiff’s week-long visit to Spain. The human tower, a cherished symbol of Catalan culture and identity, was built by members of the Castellers de Vilafranca, one of the region’s most celebrated groups.
The highlight of the performance came when eight-year-old Bruna Vall Galán climbed to the top of the nearly 10-meter tower and greeted the pope, drawing applause from the crowd. The feat showcased the teamwork, balance and trust that characterize the centuries-old tradition.
More than 130 performers took part in the display, wearing the traditional attire associated with the Castellers. Organizers described the practice as an inclusive cultural activity that welcomes participants of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs, reflecting values of unity and cooperation.
Pope Leo applauded the performers and later addressed thousands of young people at the vigil, speaking about faith, hope and social challenges facing modern society. The event formed part of his broader tour of Spain, which includes visits to Barcelona’s famous landmarks and religious sites.
The human tower performance added a distinctly local flavor to the papal visit, highlighting Catalonia’s rich cultural heritage while offering the pontiff a memorable welcome from one of Spain’s most recognizable traditions.
