Chinese President Xi Jinping has said he reached an “important consensus” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his visit to Pyongyang, according to North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The remarks came after talks between the two leaders aimed at strengthening political, economic and strategic cooperation between the longtime allies amid growing geopolitical tensions in East Asia.

According to KCNA, Xi and Kim discussed a wide range of issues affecting bilateral relations and regional security. The Chinese leader reportedly emphasized the importance of maintaining close communication and deepening cooperation between Beijing and Pyongyang while safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim welcomed Xi’s visit, describing it as a demonstration of the enduring friendship between North Korea and China. The North Korean leader also expressed support for expanding cooperation in areas including trade, economic development and diplomatic coordination.

The summit marks Xi’s first visit to North Korea since 2019 and comes at a time when both countries face increasing pressure from the United States and its allies. Analysts view the meeting as a signal of continued strategic alignment between Beijing and Pyongyang amid shifting regional dynamics.

While details of the agreements reached during the talks were not immediately disclosed, KCNA reported that both leaders agreed to strengthen exchanges at all levels and enhance coordination on major international and regional issues.

China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner and most important diplomatic ally. Relations between the two countries have grown closer in recent years as both governments seek to counter what they describe as external attempts to undermine their security and development interests.
