ACTIVIST SOWORE CONDEMNS TINUBU OVER TENURE EXTENSIONS FOR AGING CIVIL SERVANTS, ALLEGES CAREER STAGNATION AND RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

Human rights activist and political figure Omoyele Sowore has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for extending the tenures of top civil servants beyond their retirement age, describing the practice as a barrier to career advancement for younger officials and a reward for incompetence. In a statement posted on his 𝕏 account on Tuesday, Sowore accused the Tinubu administration of enabling “recalcitrant” officials who cling to power, thereby forcing subordinates into mandatory retirement or stifling their professional growth. “This situation is intolerable!” Sowore declared. “Under President Bola Tinubu’s governance, the practice of rewarding incompetent and long-serving civil servants who refuse to relinquish their positions after attaining retirement age has become obstinately prevalent, thereby obstructing the career progression of others who are either mandatorily retired or coerced out of their roles by these recalcitrant officials.” The criticism follows Tinubu’s approval on Monday of a tenure extension for Kemi Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), announced by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga. Sowore also condemned a similar extension granted to Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, linking both officials to alleged human rights abuses. He accused Nandap of placing Tinubu’s political opponents on a national watchlist during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, restricting their movement at airports and borders. Sowore further alleged that Egbetokun, as police chief, oversaw the lethal suppression of demonstrators and the prosecution of minors on “treason” charges. “This Nigeria Immigration Service Controller-General Kemi Nandap started placing Tinubu opponents on the national watchlist at airports and border posts across Nigeria during #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests in August 2024, just as Kayode Egbetokun as IGP of Nigeria Police Force was murdering protesters and charging minors for treason,” Sowore stated. The activist’s remarks highlight growing scrutiny of Tinubu’s retention of aging officials, with critics arguing the trend undermines institutional efficiency and fuels intergenerational inequity in public service.

The President hailed the recognition as “a fitting tribute to your unwavering commitment to excellence” and “your role in shaping Nigeria’s financial landscape.” “This honour is a testament to your pioneering role in the growth of the financial services sector in Nigeria and your visionary leadership that continues to inspire generations,” Tinubu said. He added that Ovia’s admission to the Freedom of the City of London “affirms the global relevance of Nigerian excellence and enterprise,” underscoring the banker’s impact in strengthening ties between Africa and international markets. The Freedom of the City of London, one of the United Kingdom’s oldest civic distinctions, is reserved for individuals with exceptional achievements or service. The Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas (HOSTCOM), led by His Highness Dr. Benjamin Style Tamaranebi, alongside Grand Patron Government Oweizide Ekpemukpolo Tompolo, Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027. The endorsement was announced during a world press conference on Monday, where the leaders praised Tinubu’s administration as a “turning point” for Nigeria, emphasizing recovery, stability, and growth. HOSTCOM commended Tinubu’s strategic reforms and policies over the past two years, stating they have set Nigeria on a path to prosperity. The group urged consolidation of these gains through Tinubu’s re-election, citing efforts to address past challenges and “change the course of unprogressive history.” The leaders highlighted Tinubu’s experience in administration and politics, noting his administration’s resolve to reverse negative economic trends, including dwindling crude oil production and high debt-servicing burdens inherited in 2023. Dr. Tamaranebi and Tompolo specifically lauded improved security in the Niger Delta, crediting collaborations between Tantita Security Services and government agencies for safeguarding oil installations and reducing theft. They revealed that crude oil production had surged from 600,000 barrels per day to 1.8 million barrels, positioning Nigeria as a competitive global producer. The leaders also acknowledged the impact of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), increased revenue allocation to host communities, and the provision of socio-economic amenities. “President Tinubu’s leadership has secured lives, properties, and oil assets, deserving continuity,” HOSTCOM stated. They dismissed initial skepticism about the administration’s sustainability, declaring such doubts “now history.” The group concluded that after nearly two years of assessing performance indicators, supporting Tinubu’s re-election was imperative to sustain progress under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

PRESIDENT TINUBU CITES FCT’S REMOVAL FROM TREASURY SINGLE ACCOUNT AS CATALYST FOR DEVELOPMENT BOOST

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that the decision to exempt the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) was aimed at accelerating infrastructure development and fostering resident involvement in governance. The President made the remarks during a Sallah homage by FCT residents at the Presidential Villa on Sunday, emphasizing that bureaucratic hurdles under the TSA had hindered progress in the capital city. The explanation was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday. Tinubu disclosed that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had advocated for the policy shift to enable faster execution of projects, leading to visible improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and security. “I remember the day the FCT Minister approached me, requesting exemption from the TSA to enhance efficiency. After reviewing his plans, we approved the change, and the results have been transformative,” Onanuga quoted the President as saying. Onanuga noted that Tinubu highlighted completed projects, including the Vice President’s official residence, rehabilitation of healthcare centers, and upgrades to school facilities. The President commended Wike for restructuring the FCT public service to empower civil servants and drive leadership accountability. “We celebrate the innovative ideas brought to the FCT, which have revived abandoned projects and expanded rural development,” Tinubu added. The statement further revealed the President’s call for Nigerians to prioritize competence over ethnic or religious considerations in leadership. “Security is improving, hunger is reducing, and unity is strengthening. We seek results, not magic—someone who genuinely cares,” Tinubu asserted. Onanuga emphasized the President’s praise for Wike’s role in promoting national diversity, describing him as a symbol of Nigeria’s collective potential. Onanuga also reported that Wike, leading a delegation of lawmakers, traditional rulers, and civil society groups, thanked Tinubu for hosting the historic visit and reaffirmed his commitment to delivering landmark projects. Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and other senior officials attended the event. Tinubu concluded by urging tolerance and patriotism, drawing lessons from Ramadan. “May the virtues of this sacred period guide our actions and strengthen our resolve,” the President stated.

PRESIDENT TINUBU THREATENS TO SACK FCT MINISTER WIKE OVER UPCOMING ELECTIONS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, threatening to dismiss him if the results of the upcoming FCT elections heavily favor the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike’s political party. Tinubu made the remarks during a dinner on Saturday evening held to celebrate Eid-El-Fitri, where he emphasized the need for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure victory in the territory. Addressing attendees, Tinubu revealed he had cautioned Wike, a former PDP governor, to prioritize the APC’s success in the polls. “Give me any opportunity for my party to win elections in FCT. I know where you are coming from, your own party,” Tinubu stated. He further warned, “If this thing goes too much in your own favor, you will lose your job,” underscoring the consequences of a PDP-dominated outcome. The president described his comments as a “political jab” aimed at the FCT minister, referencing Wike’s ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital. “I threw a political jab at Wike. I told him with all these great jobs you’re doing at the FCT, if election favors your party too much than my own party, you’ll lose your job oh…,” Tinubu quipped. The remarks highlight rising political tensions as Wike, a prominent PDP figure, serves in Tinubu’s APC-led administration. Wike, who served as governor of Rivers State under the PDP before his appointment as FCT minister, has yet to publicly respond to the president’s comments. The statement has sparked discussions about the implications of partisan loyalty within key government roles ahead of the elections.

He highlighted Tinubu’s consistency in upholding democratic ideals, which he said earned him Nigerians’ trust. Babangida expressed solidarity with Tinubu, noting, “Even though the challenges facing us as a nation may be daunting, you have shown equal commitment to contend with the realities that stare us in the face.” He lauded the President’s policy innovations and urged him not to relent: “You must not be tired or discouraged in providing the desired leadership to move the country forward.” The former military leader concluded by joining millions of Nigerians in celebrating Tinubu, adding, “At a time like this, when your birthday strikes the right chord, it is gratifying to celebrate you with a pat on the back.” The message reinforced confidence in Tinubu’s capacity to navigate Nigeria’s complexities while calling for sustained focus on national progress.
