SIX KILLED IN HUDSON RIVER HELICOPTER CRASH, VICTIMS INCLUDE SPANISH TOURIST FAMILY AND PILOT
Six people, including a family of five visiting from Spain and a pilot, died Thursday after a helicopter operated by New York Helicopters crashed into the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey, authorities confirmed. The aircraft was found submerged and upside down in the water, with all six victims recovered by emergency responders. The deceased included three children and two adults from the Spanish family, along with the pilot, whose identity remains undisclosed as officials work to notify relatives. New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed grief during a press conference, stating, “Our hearts go out to the family,” while recalling the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson” emergency landing. “It’s almost reminiscent of the plane going down here on the Hudson River. Thank god we didn’t lose any lives back then,” he said. The crash occurred after the helicopter departed at 2:59 p.m. local time, flying north along the Hudson before turning south and crashing near a Hoboken pier, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Jersey City’s Office of Emergency Management, leading recovery efforts with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), confirmed no additional injuries or property damage on the New Jersey side of the river. The agency is working to secure and remove the wreckage as the investigation begins. The incident marks the latest in a series of aircraft accidents in the area, including a 2019 helicopter crash with minor injuries and a fatal 2016 vintage plane crash during an air show. Authorities emphasized that victim names will be released only after families are notified. The Spanish tourist family’s visit and the pilot’s final flight path, which ended abruptly in the frigid waters, have drawn international attention as recovery teams continue their operations. Mayor Adams concluded, “We’re praying for the families and our gratitude to the rescuers,” underscoring the ongoing nature of the probe.
