FORMER FCT MINISTER JEREMIAH USENI PASSES AWAY AT 81

Nigeria’s former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, has died at the age of 81. Born on February 16, 1943, Useni was just shy of his 82nd birthday. According to family sources, he passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State described Useni’s demise as a tremendous loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation. “General Useni’s exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to service left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security and political landscape,” Mutfwang said.

Useni had a distinguished career, serving Nigeria in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, he transitioned into politics, becoming Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Mutfwang praised Useni’s life of selfless service, highlighting his contributions to the military, politics, and his community. “His legacy of compassion, kindness, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others will endure in the lives of those he impacted,” Mutfwang said.

The governor extended his deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Useni’s family, and all those mourning the loss of the distinguished elder statesman. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also mourned Useni’s passing, describing him as a courageous and dedicated individual who inspired many young officers to prioritize national interests.
