OKPEBHOLO DISTRIBUTES 2025 SUV MODELS TO EDO LG CHAIRPERSONS, VOWS NON-INTERFERENCE IN LG FUNDS

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to non-interference in local government funds, stating that this approach will enable the third tier of government to drive development at the grassroots level. Okpebholo made this declaration on Saturday, May 31, 2025, while presenting 2025 model Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to the 18 local government chairmen in the state. The governor emphasized that the vehicles are strictly for official duties and not for personal use, adding that his administration will monitor their performance to ensure that local government funds are utilized effectively. “I want to thank God for making today possible as chairmen now have the privilege to drive brand new vehicles in the state,” Okpebholo said. “New things are beginning to happen in Edo State under the watch of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” Okpebholo also commended the local government chairmen for their efforts in developing their respective areas, stating that Edo State will experience more development as it competes with other states like Lagos and Abuja. “Edo will experience more development even as we compete with Lagos, Abuja, and other states of the federation,” he said. “The vehicles commissioned today are not for the private use of the local government chairmen but for the development of the people at the grassroots.” The governor criticized the previous administration, led by Godwin Obaseki, for undermining local government administration in the state. “My administration has not interfered with your funds and resources,” Okpebholo assured the chairmen. “I know how much you are receiving in the councils, and we will measure your success rate if it is commensurate with what you are receiving.” Commissioner for Local Government, Community and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Lucky Eseigbe, praised the governor for his decision not to interfere with local government funds. “This is the first time in the history of the state that 2025 models of SUV vehicles are purchased for local government chairmen,” Eseigbe noted. “The 18 local government chairmen are developing the state as blocks of classrooms, healthcare centers, and roads are being built along with other infrastructural development in the council areas”.

EDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY DRAGS EMBATTLED CHAIRMEN TO COURT OVER LOCAL GOVERNMENT CRISIS

The Edo State House of Assembly, the Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, and the 18 local government acting chairmen have filed a lawsuit against the embattled impeached chairmen at the State High Court. The originating summons, dated January 28, 2025, with Suit No: B/3405/2025, seeks declarations and orders regarding the suspension of the 18 local government council chairmen and their vice chairmen. The claimants are seeking a declaration that the Edo State House of Assembly has the power to suspend a chairman and/or vice chairman of a local government council in Edo State, as provided in Section 20 (b) of the Local Government Law, 2000. They also seek a declaration that the suspension of the 18 local government chairmen and their vice chairmen has not obliterated the democratic structure/system of local government councils in Edo State. Furthermore, the claimants are seeking declarations that the leader(s) of the legislative arms of the local government councils in Edo State are democratically elected members of the council and are entitled to act on behalf of the council in the absence of the chairman and vice chairman. They also seek an order directing the defendants to allow the claimants to access the funds due to the respective local government councils. The defendants include the embattled impeached chairmen, the executive governor of Edo State, the government of Edo State, and other officials. The claimants are seeking an order of injunction restraining the defendants from interfering with the affairs, administration, management, and control of the local government councils. The lawsuit is a significant development in the ongoing local government crisis in Edo State, which has been marked by tensions between the Edo State House of Assembly and the embattled impeached chairmen.
