COURT GRANTS BAIL TO FIVE SDP LOYALISTS OF EX-KADUNA GOVERNOR EL-RUFAI

A Magistrate Court in Karu, Abuja, has granted bail to five loyalists of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who were arrested and remanded in custody over an ongoing leadership crisis in the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The defendants, who include the FCT SDP Chairman Nuradeen Bisala, his deputy Humphrey Onwukaeze, National Youth Leader Eluwa Henry, National Legal Adviser Solsuema Osaro, and National Secretary Ekpenyong Ambo, were charged with alleged criminal trespass, theft, inciting public disturbance, and mischief. Their lawyer, Ubong Akpan, argued that his clients had obtained a police permit to visit the SDP Secretariat at 17 Nairobi Street, Wuse 2 Abuja, and were therefore shocked to be accused of trespass. “It’s outrageous that the same police that gave my clients clearance will still accuse them of trespass for acting on its permit,” Akpan said. Magistrate Bala Ndajowa described the defendants as law-abiding citizens who had sought police approval before heading to the SDP Secretariat. He added that the police had placed nothing before the court to warrant denying them bail. The defendants were admitted to bail in the sum of N2 million each, with one surety who must be a resident of the FCT with a credible means of livelihood. The court has scheduled August 11 for the hearing of the matter. The defendants were remanded in custody on Monday, and their bail application was vigorously opposed by the prosecution. However, the court’s decision to grant bail has provided temporary relief to the defendants.

FORMER KADUNA GOVERNOR EL-RUFAI QUITS APC, DEFECTS TO SDP

In a shocking move, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a significant departure from the party’s founding principles. El-Rufai, who played a pivotal role in the formation of the APC in 2013, expressed his disappointment with the party’s current leadership, stating that they have abandoned the progressive ideals that once defined the party. Despite his efforts to address these concerns privately and publicly, El-Rufai claimed that the party’s leadership has shown no willingness to listen. As a result, El-Rufai has decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a move that is expected to send shockwaves throughout the Nigerian political landscape. El-Rufai has instructed his supporters and associates to follow suit, marking a significant shift in the country’s political dynamics. In a statement, El-Rufai reflected on his tenure as Governor of Kaduna State, highlighting his achievements in implementing progressive policies aimed at advancing human development. However, he lamented that these accomplishments are no longer valued within the APC, which he believes has lost its way. El-Rufai’s defection is seen as a major blow to the APC, which has faced internal strife and criticism in recent times. The move is also expected to boost the fortunes of the SDP, which has been seeking to expand its influence in Nigerian politics.

EL-RUFAI CLAIMS TINUBU CHANGED HIS MIND ON MINISTERIAL NOMINATION, NOT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY REJECTION

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has revealed that he was not rejected by the National Assembly as a ministerial nominee, contrary to public perception. In an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Monday, El-Rufai claimed that President Bola Tinubu simply “changed his mind” on his nomination. El-Rufai explained that after serving as governor for eight years, he had planned to move on, but President Tinubu appealed to him to put his plans on hold and eventually agreed to nominate him as a minister. However, El-Rufai stated that Tinubu later changed his mind, and he was not confirmed by the Senate. “Please, don’t believe the story that the National Assembly rejected me. The President didn’t want me in his cabinet, he changed his mind. Whatever it is, frankly, I don’t care,” El-Rufai said. In August 2023, the Senate withheld El-Rufai’s confirmation as a ministerial nominee, citing security reports from the State Security Service. However, El-Rufai’s latest revelation sheds new light on the circumstances surrounding his nomination.
