VIDEO: PRESIDENT TINUBU ARRIVES IN BRAZIL FOR BRICS SUMMIT

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ahead of the 17th Summit of BRICS, a gathering of major emerging economies. Tinubu is attending the summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, leveraging Nigeria’s status as a ‘partner country’ – a membership category short of full status. According to reports, the Partner status is higher than that of a guest country, reflecting Nigeria’s growing influence in global affairs. South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia are among the African members of BRICS. The summit, themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” aims to discuss global challenges and economic cooperation among member nations. As a partner country, Nigeria is expected to contribute to the discussions and advance its interests in global trade, sustainable development, and financial inclusion. Prior to attending the BRICS summit, President Tinubu concluded a four-day state visit to Saint Lucia, where he held high-level discussions with the island nation’s leaders and addressed a joint session of the Saint Lucian Parliament. The visit marked a significant chapter in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with the Caribbean, yielding multiple milestones that underscored a renewed push for South-South cooperation, ancestral reconnection, and economic diplomacy. During his visit, President Tinubu met with Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre, and Governor-General, Cyril Errol Charles, exchanging views on issues ranging from climate change and disaster resilience to education, technical cooperation, and shared heritage between Africa and the Caribbean. The Nigerian leader also announced a cultural exchange program and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to offering scholarships and technical assistance to OECS students.
