GIRL CHILD EDUCATION AND SANITARY PAD SENSITIZATION CRUCIAL FOR FUTURE – PRINCESS JOY IDAM
The Executive Director of Weekenders Media Commercial Limited, Princess Joy Idam, has reiterated the need for girl child education and sensitization on the proper use of sanitary pads. She made this call during a one-day sensitization program held in Abuja on May 29, 2022, in collaboration with Standup for Women Society, SWS FCT Chapter, Pad Up Africa, and Child Education & Crime Eradication Foundation. The program, themed “Securing Our Future Today, SOFT Project,” aimed to ensure that no fewer than 5 million girls get sanitary pads for free. Princess Idam emphasized that the cost of sanitary pads is a major challenge for many girls, leading some to use unhygienic materials that can damage their reproductive system. “It should be a policy that must be followed as one pack of Pad would not be enough for the girls if proper pad use of 4-5 a day is to be followed,” she said. She called on the government to provide free sanitary pads in schools, arguing that if men can get free condoms, girls should also get free sanitary pads. “If men who can afford condoms get it free, then girls should get Pads free at schools,” she declared. The Executive Director of Make A Difference Initiative, Lemmy Ughegbe, commended the group for the initiative and called for an inclusion policy that would ensure the distribution of free sanitary pads to schools for the girl child. He also advocated for gender balance in policies, noting that women are often excluded from condom distribution programs. Princess Idam thanked the Office of the Chief of Defense Staff and the Office of the Chief of Army Staff for their support and called on friends, manufacturers of pads, government, elected officials, and captains of industry to partner with Weekenders magazine to ensure more girls and schools get sanitary pads for free.
