INFLUX OF HERDERS AT KWARA BORDER TOWNS TRIGGERS VOTER FRAUD CONCERNS
A large-scale influx of Fulani herders into the border communities of Kaiama and Baruten in Kwara State is raising alarms over possible voter registration manipulation. Residents report that truckloads of herders are arriving to participate in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Continuous Voter Registration exercise, creating fear and tension in the area. The communities, which are predominantly Batonu-speaking, share a porous international border with the Republic of Benin, complicating efforts to monitor the movement of people. INEC’s registration process began with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, followed by physical registration on August 25, and will run until August 30, 2026. The situation has gained national attention after footage circulated widely on social media platform X. “This unusually large influx is sparking fears of political manipulation and security challenges,” a concerned social media user commented, as many Nigerians question the intent behind the mobilisation, with locals saying they are watching developments closely.
