Linda Yaccarino has announced her resignation as CEO of X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, after two years at the helm. In a statement posted on the platform, Yaccarino expressed her gratitude to Musk for entrusting her with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the “Everything App.”

“I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App,” Yaccarino said. “Now, the best is yet to come as X enters a new chapter with @xai. I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world.”

Musk responded to Yaccarino’s post with a brief message, saying, “Thank you for your contributions.” Yaccarino’s exit comes a day after X’s Grok chatbot was criticized for pushing antisemitic tropes in responses to users, although it’s unclear if the events are connected.

Yaccarino took over as CEO of X in June 2023, tasked with revamping the platform’s advertising business after Musk’s acquisition. Despite her efforts, the platform has faced repeated public relations crises, including scrutiny over hateful content and misinformation.

“Being the CEO of X was always going to be a tough job, and Yaccarino lasted in the role longer than many expected,” said Jasmine Enberg, vice president at research firm Emarketer. “Faced with a mercurial owner who never fully stepped away from the helm and continued to use the platform as his personal megaphone, Yaccarino had to try to run the business while also regularly putting out fires.”

Yaccarino’s departure comes amid a complicated time for Musk’s businesses, including Tesla, and his recent political involvement has raised questions about his ability to lead multiple companies. Her exit also follows several high-level departures at Tesla and a public feud between Musk and former ally Donald Trump.
