Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement on his X handle, Obi explained that the decision to join forces with other opposition leaders was driven by the need to save Nigeria from further decline.

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” Obi said. He emphasized the coalition’s commitment to unity, sacrifice, and collaboration in order to usher in a new era of competent and compassionate leadership for Nigeria.

The coalition, which includes prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and ex-Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola, formally adopted the ADC on Wednesday as its platform for the 2027 elections. Senator David Mark will serve as National Chairman of the party, while Aregbesola takes on the role of National Secretary.

Obi stressed that the challenges facing Nigeria require collective action and broad-based partnerships. “No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls — even when those bridges are uneasy,” he said.

The coalition’s core mission is to provide a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that prioritizes the welfare of Nigerians. “Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” Obi declared.

Obi’s decision to join the ADC coalition signals a renewed push by the opposition to present a united front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
