TRAGIC OYO EXPRESSWAY ACCIDENT LEAVES 16 DEAD AFTER BUS COLLIDES WITH STATIONARY TRUCK

At least 16 people have been confirmed dead in a devastating accident involving an 18-seater bus and a stationary truck on the Oyo/Ogbomosho Expressway in Oyo town. The Oyo State government confirmed the incident through a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, Adebayo Akinwande, on Wednesday. Akinwande detailed that the accident occurred in front of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, with the first report received at exactly 06:21 hours on Tuesday, 25th November 2025, via a phone call. He stated that the agency promptly deployed officers to the scene upon notification. Investigations at the site revealed that the passenger bus swerved and collided with the stationary Howo truck from behind, leading to a fire that engulfed both vehicles and trapped passengers inside. “Upon arrival at the scene, we observed an 18-passenger Mazda bus, registration number GWL 687 XB (Kano), had swerved and crashed into a stationary Howo trailer, registration number LSR 340 XW (Lagos), from the rear. The trailer caught fire, and our fire crew quickly initiated rescue operations and extinguished the blaze,” Akinwande said. The fire service recovered 16 bodies at the scene, while three survivors were immediately transported to a nearby hospital by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps for medical treatment. Akinwande attributed the accident to overspeeding and the careless parking of heavy trucks along the expressway, warning that such practices continue to pose serious risks to motorists and passengers alike. Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
