The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has described the hijab as a symbol of obedience, dignity, strength and worship, while calling for unity and mutual respect among Nigerians. In a message to mark the 2026 World Hijab Day, celebrated globally on February 1, the First Lady said the observance highlights the beauty of choice, faith and identity of Muslim women. Speaking on the theme, “Unity in Hijab,” Senator Tinubu noted that the hijab serves as a reminder that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division. “The hijab is a symbol of obedience, dignity, strength, and worship for many women, and a reminder that our diversity is a source of unity, not division,” she said. She urged Nigerians to continue embracing peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and solidarity across cultural and religious lines, stressing that national unity remains essential for collective progress. “As a nation, may we continue to embrace mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and solidarity across all cultures and beliefs. Together, we are stronger,” the First Lady added. World Hijab Day is observed annually to promote understanding, religious tolerance and the rights of Muslim women to practice their faith freely.
