OFFICERS BEHIND FOILED COUP KNEW CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR ACTIONS – CDS

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has said that the military officers arrested over the alleged foiled coup were fully aware of the consequences of their actions before embarking on the plot. Musa, who is also the Minister of Defence, made the remark while reacting to appeals by families of the detained officers who are asking for leniency. A total of 16 officers, including a brigadier general and a colonel, were arrested in October 2025 in connection with the alleged coup attempt. At the time of their arrest, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) issued a statement on October 4, citing “acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations” without confirming the exact nature of the offence. However, on January 26, 2026, the DHQ officially confirmed that the officers were involved in a plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking on the matter, the CDS said the officers “must have made up their minds” and understood the gravity and consequences of their actions before proceeding with the alleged coup plan. Meanwhile, families of the accused officers have continued to appeal to the federal government and military authorities for mercy, citing years of service and loyalty to the nation. The military has maintained that due process will be followed in handling the case, stressing that discipline and loyalty remain fundamental pillars of the armed forces.
