AT LAST!!! PLATEAU STATE GOVERNOR, CALEB MUTFWANG DEFECT FROM PDP TO APC

The All Progressives Congress has announced the defection of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, from the Peoples Democratic Party. The declaration was made by the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yelwatda, during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting. Professor Yelwatda stated that Governor Mutfwang’s move to the APC signifies a major political realignment. He emphasized the strategic importance of the defection for the party’s dominance in the region. “With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North Central is now governed by the APC,” Yelwatda announced to the gathering of the party’s national caucus. This development, if substantiated, would mean all six states in the North Central geopolitical zone – Plateau, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Benue – are under the control of the ruling party. As of the time of this report, there has been no immediate statement from Governor Mutfwang or the Plateau State Government to confirm or deny the APC’s claim.

RIVERS STATE GOVERNOR FUBARA DEFECTS FROM PDP TO APC

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially switched his political allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All-Progressives Congress. The governor announced his defection on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The move marks a significant political realignment in the oil-rich state. Governor Fubara addressed attendees directly, stating his rationale for the cross-carpeting. “This decision reflects my commitment to ensuring stable governance and aligning with partners who support the progress of Rivers State,” he reportedly said. His defection occurs against a backdrop of sustained political tensions within the state. This development is widely seen as signaling the start of a new and distinct phase in the political landscape of Rivers State. The full implications for the state’s governance and the national political scene are yet to be determined.

FORMER SGF BABACHIR LAWAL QUITS APC, JOINS NEW POLITICAL COALITION

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect. Lawal, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari during his first term, announced his decision in a letter dated June 29, 2025, addressed to the APC Chairman of Bangshika Ward, Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State. In the letter, Lawal stated, “I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress. In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens.” He extended his warm regards to other members of the party, wishing them well. Lawal’s departure from the APC comes amid rising momentum within a new political coalition seeking to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 general elections. The coalition, reportedly led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform. According to Lawal, the coalition is attracting dissatisfied members from various parties, with prominent politicians like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi aligned with the initiative. However, he emphasized the independence of the coalition, saying, “Many of us are former APC members. Atiku and (Peter) Obi are with us, but not as official emissaries of their current platforms. This is an independent initiative aimed at providing a genuine alternative for Nigerians.” Lawal’s resignation has sparked fears of implosion within the APC, particularly with growing ill feelings among members, especially in the Northern part of the country. The development is seen as a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape, with Lawal’s next move expected to have far-reaching implications.

DELTA STATE GOVERNOR SHERIFF OBOREVWORI DEFECTS TO APC ALONG WITH PDP STRUCTURE

The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, and the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection, which was announced by pioneer PDP state chairman, James Manager, marks the end of the PDP’s 26-year dominance in the oil-rich South-south state. Manager cited the PDP’s national leadership crisis and its weakened position with only 11 governors as reasons for the move. “The party’s instability and recent resolutions against coalitions diminished its electoral prospects,” he said. The defection is attributed to local political challenges, including Oborevwori’s strained relationship with former Governor James Ibori, who opposed him in the 2022 PDP primary. The influence of President Bola Tinubu’s allies, such as Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), and the death of Ijaw leader Edwin Clark, further weakened Oborevwori’s position in the PDP. The PDP’s declining popularity in Delta State, evident in its 2023 election losses, including the presidential vote to the Labour Party, also contributed to the defection. Additionally, the ongoing EFCC investigation of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa may have incentivized the move, with hopes of leniency under APC membership. Senator Ned Nwoko, a recent APC defector, welcomed the new members, promising collaboration. While the APC may not guarantee popularity in Delta, it offers Oborevwori federal government support and protection from local adversaries, securing his political survival amid a turbulent PDP landscape.
