FORMER SGF BABACHIR LAWAL QUITS APC, JOINS NEW POLITICAL COALITION

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect. Lawal, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari during his first term, announced his decision in a letter dated June 29, 2025, addressed to the APC Chairman of Bangshika Ward, Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State. In the letter, Lawal stated, “I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress. In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens.” He extended his warm regards to other members of the party, wishing them well. Lawal’s departure from the APC comes amid rising momentum within a new political coalition seeking to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 general elections. The coalition, reportedly led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform. According to Lawal, the coalition is attracting dissatisfied members from various parties, with prominent politicians like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi aligned with the initiative. However, he emphasized the independence of the coalition, saying, “Many of us are former APC members. Atiku and (Peter) Obi are with us, but not as official emissaries of their current platforms. This is an independent initiative aimed at providing a genuine alternative for Nigerians.” Lawal’s resignation has sparked fears of implosion within the APC, particularly with growing ill feelings among members, especially in the Northern part of the country. The development is seen as a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape, with Lawal’s next move expected to have far-reaching implications.

DELTA STATE GOVERNOR SHERIFF OBOREVWORI DEFECTS TO APC ALONG WITH PDP STRUCTURE

The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, and the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection, which was announced by pioneer PDP state chairman, James Manager, marks the end of the PDP’s 26-year dominance in the oil-rich South-south state. Manager cited the PDP’s national leadership crisis and its weakened position with only 11 governors as reasons for the move. “The party’s instability and recent resolutions against coalitions diminished its electoral prospects,” he said. The defection is attributed to local political challenges, including Oborevwori’s strained relationship with former Governor James Ibori, who opposed him in the 2022 PDP primary. The influence of President Bola Tinubu’s allies, such as Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), and the death of Ijaw leader Edwin Clark, further weakened Oborevwori’s position in the PDP. The PDP’s declining popularity in Delta State, evident in its 2023 election losses, including the presidential vote to the Labour Party, also contributed to the defection. Additionally, the ongoing EFCC investigation of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa may have incentivized the move, with hopes of leniency under APC membership. Senator Ned Nwoko, a recent APC defector, welcomed the new members, promising collaboration. While the APC may not guarantee popularity in Delta, it offers Oborevwori federal government support and protection from local adversaries, securing his political survival amid a turbulent PDP landscape.
