POLICE URGE PROTEST GROUPS TO RESPECT COURT ORDER, WARN AGAINST HIJACKERS

The Nigeria Police Force has urged protest groups to respect a court order restricting demonstrations in certain areas of the Federal Capital Territory, warning that punitive measures await offenders. In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the police reaffirm their commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public peace in accordance with constitutional provisions. “The Order restrains the respondents and any other persons or groups acting under their instruction from staging protests within and around Aso Rock Villa and its environs, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square and Shehu Shagari Way,” Hundeyin stated. Hundeyin emphasized that the police recognize and respect the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and expression, but such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law. The police have advised all intending protesters and counter-protest groups to avoid restricted areas and refrain from any act capable of provoking confrontation or disturbing public order. “We will ensure the free flow of traffic, protection of lives and property, and security of all law-abiding citizens,” Hundeyin assured. The statement warned that offenders will be arrested, subjected to full investigation, and prosecuted under relevant criminal laws, including laws relating to public order, violent conduct, and terrorism where applicable.

The Office of Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko has issued a stern warning against the spread of fake news and misinformation using the senator’s name. In a statement, the office declared that the era of fabricating unfounded stories to mislead the public and gain traction online at Senator Nwoko’s expense is over. The Director, Communications, Hon. Gloria Okolugbo emphasized that this statement serves as an official notice of their intent to take decisive legal action against any entity or individual found guilty of spreading falsehoods. “Let it be known that laws exist to protect against defamation and misinformation, and those who disregard them will face the full weight of legal consequences,” Okolugbo said. This move comes after recent rumors about Senator Nwoko’s personal life were debunked by his office, with his team calling the rumors “false and maliciously crafted”.
